![]() ![]() Through repetition and the physicality of painting and drawing his work becomes a meditative practice, unleashing and reiterating imagery and themes from his subconscious. His process is anchored by experimentation and daily practice, which has resulted in a diverse body of work ranging from large-scale paintings to intimate drawings. We welcome the exploratory works of Jon Sewell, Matthew Sharer, Bingham Barnes, Rachel Briggs, Yanira Vissepo, Graeme Morris and Josh Shearon for this exciting exhibition. ![]() We will also consider a possible gridless future - if forced back to rudimentary tools and practices, what could that future of print look like? Collaborators will work with elements of printed materials that in some cases are only fully enjoyed in a physical, tactile setting, while others will bring the digital into the physical realm, creating an equally one of a kind “irl” experience. As digital platforms become more expensive and popular for spreading ideas, we wonder what will happen to these carefully crafted pieces of an analog age. There is an emphasis on the physical, tactile interaction we get from flipping through a magazine, shopping through newly silkscreened t-shirts, or framing up a new print. In the digital age, what will become of print media? This group show explores the trajectory of printmaking, screenprinting, zines, and other physical media. Ultimately this reliquary of imagined sacred objects, or relics of imaginary “saints” (or wise women who push(ed) society forward) is meant to conjure a spell of protection. Layered images, signs and symbols, some in watercolor and / or gouache, some screen-printed and / or stitched over, allow for open-ended, multi-valent meanings and invite the viewer to draw upon their own associations to complete the work. ![]() ![]() Each of the 13 hands represents aspects of a different feminine archetype, such as lover, huntress, healer, etc. The hand and the eye are central motifs, suggesting presence, protest, objection and protection. The installation is an assemblage of various intuitive media and material explorations in which images have been overlaid and overprinted on top of each other and found objects have been transformed from their original meaning and use. It is the scarring over of a healing wound that does not heal, a hand that writes a prayer over and over, the mark of time across a surface, the stories and histories (and rights) written and overwritten, and the crone looking back at herself as a maiden, wiser, yet wizened. The feminine archetype of the crone or grotesque, for me, ultimately is a generative force that provides protection and guardianship, such as the Sheela-na-gig, or the Egyptian god Bes, respectively. In this case, the idea of that palimpsest functions as a metaphor for the feminine archetype as a continual site of renewal (as in a feedback loop). A nod to the liminal, palimpsest can mean “altered but still bearing traces of its earlier form” (Wikipedia). Opening Celebration: September 2nd, 3:00 - 9:00pmīorn of grief, hope, transition, transformation and the renewal of life, this multi-media installation explores my own changing experience and the feminine archetype as palimpsest.
